Murphy's Law states that guitar strings break at
the exact time you need them not to. You'll have to
accept that, and be sure to always own at least one full set of
unused strings, so any that break can be replaced
immediately. It is a good idea
to change
your guitar's strings regularly regardless of how
often you play. Over time, guitar strings that are
tuned to concert pitch lose their elasticity.
(Concert pitch is the universal frequency or note to
which all instruments are set). Also, stretching due
to regular play coupled with the exposure to the
natural oils and perspiration from our hands can
cause the strings to deteriorate and corrode
resulting in significant loss of tone and
brightness.
A guitar
pick is a type of
plectrum designed
for use on a guitar. Over time
people have made picks of various
materials, including plastic,
rubber, felt, tortoiseshell, wood,
metal, and stone. They most often
take the shape of an acute isosceles
triangle with the two equal corners
very rounded and the third corner
rounded to a lesser extent. This
shape is, however, merely one of
many used by manufacturers.
A capo is a small device which wraps around the neck
of your guitar, pinching the strings off at a
specific fret.
It is a very common
guitar accessory that allows you to transpose or
change the key of the guitar without having to
re-tune the instrument. Ideal for singing or
accompanying another instrument a capo is a very
worthwhile and relatively inexpensive investment.
The
guitar slide is a tube of some hard material about
one to two inches long. Commonly, it's made from
glass and metals. Each type of guitar slide has
distinct characteristics, tonality, and overall
sound. The guitar slide is pressed lightly against
the strings so as not to touch the strings of the
fret, producing a sustained tone which can be varied
in pitch by moving the slide across the neck. A
quick side-to-side motion is often used in this way
to generate vibrato.
A good quality tuner
is essential for both beginners and advanced
players. In addition to making sure your instrument
is perfectly in tune it ensures that you are tuned
to “concert pitch” – the universal frequency or note
to which all instruments are set. Today’s concert
pitch is A440. A properly calibrated tuner is an
important accessory for every guitar player.
A gigbag
is a padded, soft-sided bag used for
the storage and transport of a
guitar or bass guitar. Most gig bags
include pockets for storage of sheet
music, instrument cables, picks,
straps, and other accessories, along
with shoulder straps and grab
handles for added comfort,
portability, and ease of use.
Another alternative to gigbags are
hardshell cases which are
generally heavier but offer more
protection for your instrument.
Guitar Straps not only serve a functional purpose,
but have very much become a reflection of personal
expression. Straps come in different colours,
patterns, materials and designs. Choose the right
guitar strap for you.
There are lots of different types of guitar stands,
and the decision is based on which stand is more
suited to you. There is the standard guitar
stand, the universal guitar stand, the auto grab
guitar stand, the double and triple guitar stand and
the wall mounted guitar stand. The standard
guitar stand is the most popular and comes in three
different types : classical, electric/bass and
universal
Amplifiers are used with electric guitars, bass
guitars and acoustic-electric guitars. The smallest
guitar amplifiers are usually 10 watts, with other
amplifiers ranging to 500 watts or more. All
guitar amplifiers sound different. Some are
good for rock and roll whereas others have a softer
and less bright sound.
